The Chinese New Year's history

The Spring Festival (春节, Chūnjié), another name for Chinese New Year, is one of the most important and traditional holidays in Chinese culture. With a millennium-long history, it is steeped in customs, mythology, and farming methods.

According to the story:

Villagers discovered that the beast feared loud noises, bright lights, and the color red. To ward off Nian, people began lighting fireworks, hanging red banners, and wearing red clothing—traditions still observed today. The festival's mythological origins are sometimes linked to the story of Nian (年), a legendary beast that ravaged towns at the end of the year.

Customs and Traditions

1. Cleaning the house is one method to welcome good fortune and drive out bad luck.

Decorations: Paper cutouts with auspicious words, lanterns, and crimson banners are used to decorate homes.

2. Reunion Dinner: Families get together for a feast on New Year's Eve that includes symbolic foods like rice cakes (growth), fish (plenty), and dumplings (wealth).

Red Envelope Distribution:

3. Hongbao (红包): As a sign of good fortune and wealth, elders present children and younger family members with red envelopes filled with cash.

4. Lion and Dragon Dances: Acts represent the expulsion of bad spirits and the arrival of good fortune.

5. Fireworks and firecrackers are used to ward off evil spirits and welcome happiness and optimism.

6. Visiting Temples and Relatives: To pray for a happy year, people visit their loved ones and worship at temples.

7. On the fifteenth day of the Lantern Festival, a parade, riddles, and lantern display signal the conclusion of the festivities.

Beginning of the Lunar Year: On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, the Chinese Lunar New Year officially begins. In this year, the Year of the Wood Snake begins.

In the Chinese zodiac, 2025 is predicted to be the Year of the Wood Snake, a time of change, development, and wisdom that reflects the qualities of the Snake along with the nourishing force of the Wood element.

The Snake Zodiac's General Characteristics

According to Chinese culture, the snake represents:

Intelligence and Wisdom: Snakes possess a high degree of intelligence, analysis, and intuition.

Charm & Elegance: They exude a sense of mystery, grace, and charisma.

Caution: Distinguished by their strategic and well-thought-out disposition.

Snakes are resilient because they can adjust to new situations and overcome obstacles.

In 2025, the Wood Element's Impact

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the five elements that are linked to each zodiac year and have an impact on the traits of that year. Characteristics of wood include friendliness, inventiveness, adaptability, and growth. Individual wood snakes are thought to be more cooperative, sympathetic, and visionary than other snake species. By promoting cooperation and open-mindedness, the Wood element softens the Snake's caution.

Green, brown, yellow, and black are lucky colors that stand for development, steadiness, and knowledge.

The numbers 2 through 9 are lucky.
